Harwell Restoration is looking to recruit a Conservation Technician to meet our expanding business. Harwell Restoration is the UK and Ireland’s leading service provider in disaster recovery after fire and flood damage to collections in libraries, archives, museums and historic houses, with over 1,000 institutions retaining Harwell for emergency response support via our Priority User Service. In addition, we also provide solutions to collections care issues including pest management and mould remediation and a growing offering in conservation.

The position would be based initially at our main facility in Oxfordshire and from 2025 at our new premises in Thatcham, Berkshire. We are looking for an individual who can work as part of a team, work within a dynamic environment with flexibility, demonstrate awareness of differing customer needs, and with good communication skills. Permanent employees benefit from at least 25 days annual leave + bank holidays, sick leave, pension and a bonus scheme.

You will be working on collections damaged in fires or floods for libraries, archives and museums in the UK and Ireland as well as in projects from the insurance industry for commercial and domestic policyholders. Additionally we are developing our non-emergency response conservation services, providing solutions to Priority Users in projects ranging from project surveys, to paper repairs, book repair, rebinding and housing solutions.

Your role will involve cleaning, repairing and rehousing a variety of archival material including documents, plans, photographs and volumes (mainly text blocks but with some minor binding repairs).

Training and mentoring will be provided to develop material knowledge, treatments and practical skills.

Training will also be provided on assessments and writing treatment recommendations which will also be part of the role.

Essential:

Experience in Microsoft Office: Excel and Word

Knowledge of collections care

Attention to detail

Good time keeping

Experience of Conservation projects
